Petition for Preemies
Do you know someone who had a baby too soon?
I just got an email from friends whose baby came at the end of September instead of October. It turns out Richard the Third is fine and they only had to stay at the hospital for a week; but many babies have to stay for months in the NICU, struggling to breathe, fighting for life.
It is happening more and more. According to the March of Dimes, 1200 babies will be born prematurely TODAY, everyday.
Premature birth is a growing problem. The March of Dimes has put out a call for all of us to sign their Petition for Preemies. It urges the federal government and the new administration to increase research support into the causes of prematurity and expand access to healthcare coverage for pregnant women.
Won’t you take a minute to sign and pass it along? If you have a blog will you post something? Increased awareness of the problem is key to starting the conversation.

Prematurity is the leading killer of America's newborns. Those who survive often have lifelong health problems, including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, chronic lung disease, blindness and hearing loss.
Prematurity has been escalating steadily and alarmingly over the past two decades. In 2004, more than 500,000 infants were born prematurely, the highest number ever reported for the U.S. In 2005, the United States as a society paid at least $26.2 billion in economic costs associated with preterm birth (medical and educational expenses, loss in productivity).
Preterm delivery can happen to any pregnant woman. In about four out of every 10 cases, the causes are unknown. It is important to learn the signs of preterm labor.

WalkAmerica
Have you noticed that every charity has some sort of Walk or Run or Race these days? Have you ever participated? Well, today, I did WalkAmerica for the March of Dimes. This walk is the granddaddy of them all. It started in 1970 and has been going strong ever since. It felt good to get out there with all of the other walkers to do something for a good cause. There were groups of folks from companies walking together. There were teams from high schools, and there were lots of people that were walking with a baby’s picture on their t-shirts. There were families, there were dogs, there were clowns, there were cheerleaders, it seemed like everybody and their brother was there. There were lots of babies, which made sense, since the mission of the March of Dimes is to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. There are Walks in many communities in every state. Check out their website at WalkAmerica.org. Put on your shoes, get out there.
